7 signs it’s time to redesign your website

If several of these sound familiar, your site is probably costing you inquiries. A redesign gives you a fresh start on a solid foundation.

  1. It’s slow to load

Especially on smartphones. A visitor in a hurry won’t wait: they go back to the search results and click on a competitor.

  2. It doesn’t display well on mobile

Tiny text, buttons that are too small, a page you have to scroll sideways: on a phone, your site turns people away instead of winning them over.

  3. Its design looks dated

It no longer reflects the quality of your work, or your current services and prices. And first impressions matter, especially next to a competitor with a polished site.

  4. It no longer brings in inquiries

Few calls, few quote requests, a form nobody fills out: the site exists, but it isn’t working for you.

  5. People can’t find it on Google

When people search for your trade and your town, your site doesn’t show up, or only far down the list. Page titles, text, and page structure are often to blame.

  6. You can’t change anything on it

Every change goes through someone else, or the tool is so complicated that you no longer dare to touch it.

  7. It’s no longer updated

An outdated plugin, theme, or PHP version, security warnings, no padlock in the address bar: a neglected site becomes vulnerable.

Benefits

What a website redesign changes

A redesign is more than a fresh coat of paint: it’s a chance to fix everything that holds your visitors back, and Google along with them.

Speed

Compressed images in the right format, lightweight code, on-demand loading: your pages load quickly, even on an average connection.

Mobile display

A layout designed for phones first: readable text, easy-to-tap buttons, and a clickable phone number.

SEO

Structured headings, clear text, one page per service, structured data: Google understands what you do and where you do it.

Conversions

Visible calls to action, a simple quote form, online appointment booking: an interested visitor can take action without searching.

Security

An up-to-date site, on HTTPS, on a solid foundation: fewer vulnerabilities, fewer outages, and a padlock that reassures your visitors.

Training included

As with every new website, training on how to use your site is included at handover, to help you manage your everyday content yourself.

Redesign and SEO: don’t lose what’s working

It’s the most common concern, and a legitimate one: a poorly prepared redesign can push a site down in Google. Well prepared, it limits that risk and gives your site a stronger foundation.

Over time, Google has associated your current pages with certain searches. If those addresses disappear overnight, visitors and search engine bots land on an error page (404), and that built-up value is lost. So the key to a redesign is ensuring continuity between the old site and the new one.

Before touching the design, I take inventory of your existing pages and identify the ones that matter: those that get visits, rank well, or generate inquiries. If you have access to Google Search Console or Google Analytics, that data is valuable, so be sure to share it with me.

What is a 301 redirect?

It’s an instruction that tells browsers and Google that a page has permanently moved to a new address. A visitor who clicks an old link automatically lands on the new page, and Google passes most of the trust earned by the old page on to the new one. It’s the cornerstone of a successful migration.

Your rankings also depend on your competitors and on how Google evolves, before and after a redesign alike. What we can avoid are the classic mistakes: pages deleted without a redirect, content wiped out, a new site blocked from search engines, and forgotten page titles and descriptions.

Process

How your website redesign works

Four steps, one point of contact, and your current site stays online until the switchover.

  1. Step 1: Discovery call and review

We take stock of your current site, your goals, and your budget: what works, what’s holding you back, and what needs to change. By video call (Google Meet), or by phone if you’d rather call me.

    Free, no obligation

  2. Step 2: Detailed quote

You know what’s carried over, what’s rebuilt, the price excl. VAT, and the timeline. Nothing starts without your approval.

    Price set before we start

  3. Step 3: New site in progress

I build the new site separately while the old one keeps running. You approve it before launch.

    Your approval before the switchover

  4. Step 4: Switchover, checks, and training

Launch, 301 redirects, sitemap submitted to Google, and page checks. Then, as with every new website, training on how to use your site is included.

    Maintenance available afterward

Estimated timelines: a redesign follows the same steps as building a new site. Typically, allow 2–3 weeks for a custom-coded business website, 1–2 weeks for a WordPress business website, and 3–4 weeks for an online store; the exact timeline is stated in the quote. After launch, website maintenance keeps your site up to date, backed up, and secure.

Questions about website redesigns

SEO, pricing, timelines, content: what you need to know before redesigning your website.

Will I lose my Google rankings with a redesign?

A poorly prepared redesign can indeed cost you traffic. To prevent that, I take inventory of your existing pages, carry over the content that works, redirect every old address to the matching new page (301 redirect), and check the pages after launch. No one can honestly guarantee rankings on Google, but these precautions avoid the mistakes that make a site drop, and they give it a stronger foundation.

How much does a website redesign cost?

It depends on what we keep and what we rebuild: the number of pages, the content to carry over, the features, and the choice between a custom-coded site and WordPress. The price is set in a free quote, before you commit to anything. For reference, my plans for new websites start at €1,599 excl. VAT for a custom-coded business website, €1,099 excl. VAT for a WordPress business website, and €2,700 excl. VAT for an online store.

How long does a redesign take?

A redesign follows the same steps as building a new site: typically, allow 2–3 weeks for a custom-coded business website, 1–2 weeks for a WordPress business website, and 3–4 weeks for an online store; for a custom web application, the timeline is set in the quote, depending on the project. The exact timeline also depends on how soon your content is available: it’s stated in the quote.

Will my site stay online during the redesign?

Yes. The new site is built separately while the old one keeps running. You approve it before launch, then the switchover happens with the redirects in place.

Can I keep my text, photos, and domain name?

Yes, and it’s actually recommended for SEO. You keep your domain name; the content that works is carried over, reformatted, and improved so it’s clear to your visitors and well understood by Google. If new content is needed, we talk it over on the discovery call to find a solution.

Will I be able to edit my new site myself?

Yes, if you’d like. With a custom-coded site, what you can edit is defined in the quote, based on your needs; with a WordPress site, you edit your own text and photos. As with every new website, training on how to use your site is included at handover. For more technical changes, I can step in at €50 excl. VAT per hour, or as part of a €500 excl. VAT annual maintenance plan.
